The Key to Being Present

How does one remain present when the present moment is challenging? It’s not what we desire so we want to get out of it as soon as possible. Our minds slip into hopes or worry about the future or to reminiscing upon better days from times past. I know the feeling, because I’ve dealt with it personally.

After digging deeper into the cause of my discomfort in the present, I discovered that I was focused on the wrong thing. My focus needed not to be on being present, but rather on being at peace. Being at peace was the missing piece to the formula.

Think about it! Anxiety, stress, worry, success and anything else that relates to what may come in the future are all things that take away our peace. How am I going to pay my bills? What if my car breaks down? What if it doesn’t work? What if it does work? These are all things of the future.

All future happenings are based on present happenings. If we’re bent out of shape because of what may or may not happen, we lose peace and therefore aren’t effective at doing much in the present. The present is always where the action is happening.

Each time I feel myself drifting into future matters, I bring my consciousness to a present state by making peace with whatever the future may bring. This ultimately kills the worry and brings me back to present moment awareness.

We don’t exist in the past. We don’t exist in the future. Our only existence is in the present and this is the only time we can be effective. The key to being present is to be at peace.
